Commissioners

Become a Unit Commissioner

Youth experience Scouting in Packs, Troops, Crews, Ships, Clubs and Posts within the five programs of Scouting. To help units become and stay strong, the Boys Scouts of America provides a program of unit service through experienced adult Scouters specifically commissioned to help chartered organizations and unit leaders achieve the aims of Scouting by using the methods of Scouting and developing a Unit Service Plan.

Because of the importance of unit service to the successful delivery of the Scouting program, you will find Commissioners at every level of Scouting to help assure that individual Scouts get the best possible program.

Commissioner service is marked by the ‘wreath of service’ on each Commissioner badge of office. It is our goal to have a Unit Commissioner assigned to each unit who stands ready to help strengthen the leadership within. There are 3 types of commissioners:

  • Unit Commissioners – assigned to 1 or more units to counsel, mentor, coach and guide unit leaders to help them deliver a quality Scouting program, maintain and increase member retention and ensure timely recharter.
  • Roundtable Commissioners – provide unit leaders with resources and training in program skills through regularly scheduled Roundtables.
  • Administrative Commissioners – primarily responsible for recruiting, training, guiding, motivating and evaluating the Commissioner staff.
