The council revamped the building and moved in at 985 West Fillmore back in 2008. It was the perfect building and location for the council with over 10,000 Scouts. Over the next 12 years, we saw significant membership losses due to a change in membership standards, the departure of the LDS church, and the pandemic. It became quite clear in 2020 that this building was just too big for what we needed. A smaller building would be cheaper and more reasonable for our budget.

The decision was made in late 2020 to sell it. We could sell for about 1.8 million dollars, and we would pay our estimated $400,000 commitment to the Victim Compensation Fund originating from the BSA Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. We could then buy a new, smaller building for around 1 million and decide what to do with the extra $400,000 from the sale.

We put the building up for sale, and in May of 2021, our portion of the compensation fund was then doubled to $800,000. Our plan would still work.

We got an offer in June of 2021 for $1.9 million and accepted it. Just about that same time, our commitment to the compensation fund was once again doubled to 1.75 million dollars. All but a few thousand dollars (after commissions and closing costs) are going to the national effort to exit bankruptcy.

The owners who bought the building in 2021 were happy to have us rent office space and keep our store. After a year, they decided to sell it, and the new owners need the entire building. Now we will be renting a new place in Colorado Springs. We are working very hard to lock in a new rental space for 1 to 5 years. The important thing to know is although this was a difficult decision – we did not lose any PROGRAM properties OR pass any of these expenses along to our members. We still operate all three of our camp properties, and our office and store in Pueblo continues to serve Scouts in southern Colorado. We made decisions through these difficult times that were vital to our commitment to delivering quality Scouting programs!
